In Halo 5: Guardians Commercial, Humanity ‘Loses’ Master Chief
One of the more entertaining aspects of Halo 5: Guardians is the chicanery involved in propaganda and the controlling of the message surrounding Master Chief. Clearly, ONI are involved in some underhanded stuff, announcing that Master Chief has passed away in a game that we know that not to be true. The whole “Hunt the Truth” storyline will prove to be an interesting one, as the latest live-action trailer for Halo 5 was released last night during Sunday Night Football.

It’s the perfect commercial to attract the attention of a non-video gaming audience, while catering to the fanbase of the game. The commercial, itself, is simple in nature, with the announcement that on October 27th, 2560, Master Chief has “died” in the line of duty. No details are given, but shots of disheveled soldiers and civilians are shown mourning his loss. It’s the (mostly) subtlety of these shots that make it resemble the life of today, with the touches of advanced technology that remind us that this game shares a story that could be told in any timeline.
The announcement serves as a call to action to end the oncoming threats facing humanity in Halo 5: Guardians, and I believe it does its job well. You can tell that there is a certain God complex projected onto Master Chief that even ONI admits he would not want. However, when you’re covering up secrets, it’s the embellishments you make that make a lie more convincing. It will be interesting to see, just like in previous Halo 5 commercials, whether we will see the other side of the coin.
Halo 5: Guardians will launch exclusively on Xbox One on October 27th.
