Dark Souls 3 Bosses Look To Improve Upon Its Predecessor

Hey look, it’s not a bunch of gigantic humanoids facing off against the hero of Dark Souls 3!

I’ve mentioned it before, but the Bloodborne-ing of the developmentDark Souls 3 has been a blessing in disguise. Not only does it provide an excellent visual aesthetic, but it means completely revitalized enemy design. That seems to be the point of emphasis with a new PlayStation Access gameplay video, highlighting some of the bosses you will fight against in Dark Souls 3. Labeled as such both on the video thumbnail and in this headline, there are potential spoilers involved. Don’t progress further if you wish to go into gameplay 100% fresh.

The first boss you encounter in the Dark Souls 3 preview is meant to showcase the ins and outs of combats as you get your non-dashing sea legs beneath you. What seems to be a simple fallen knight becomes so much more once corrupted by what appears to be ash. The themes of ash, fire and the absence of it are visualized in major bosses and enemies, even with the Vordt of the Boreal Valley excising heat in exchange for cold.

Invaders return in Dark Souls 3, with names that appear to have the same UI font style as Bloodborne. They are just as punishing as ever, taking on the strike combos and styles that the player can eventually utilize themselves. It will be crucial to taking out the oft-displayed Curse-rotted Greatwood, whose myriad of adds and spores highlight nature in malevolent corruption. The video ends with a massive beast imbued with fire as the player receives support from a familiar face…or armor set.

This is what I hoped to see when Dark Souls 3 was announced; enemy design far removed from Dark Souls 2. I’m not sure how many dudes in gigantic plated armor there were in that title, but the number was much too large to count. You get a nice bit of a look into the hints over the game’s importance over fire and ash without getting too deep into the lore and story. That comes later, when Dark Souls 3 is released on the PC, PS4 and Xbox One on April 12th.
