Shovel Knight amiibo Is Now Actually Official

No more second guessing, retailer-tweet-searching or outright lying: Shovel Knight is coming as a Nintendo amiibo figurine! The announcement comes from Yacht Club Games and Nintendo during the Nindies@Night event at EMP Museum in Seattle, an event to discuss the future of Indie gaming on Nintendo’s Wii U and 3DS platforms. A “comedic” trailer, featuring members of the Game Grumps crew, was released to make the announcement during the event, which is also up now on Youtube.

Shovel Knight is the first Indie gaming character to make an appearance as an amiibo, and brings some new features for the Shovel Knight games on Wii U and Nintendo 3DS. The figurine will unlock an in-development co-op mode on the Wii U, allowing two characters to engage in platforming action at the same time. Additionally, both the 3DS and Wii U versions will allow for leveling up and customizing your Shovel Knight character, bringing new visual aesthetics, relics and abilities into gameplay.

Currently, Shovel Knight is available on the Wii U and 3DS eShop, but the game itself will be released in physical retail form this October. Prior to the physical release, Yacht Club Games will also have free DLC for Shovel Knight that allows you to play as boss enemy Plague Knight, as part of the “Plague of Shadows” DLC content. As an added bonus, the amiibo figure will support “future Shovel Knight games,” indicating that the toy will have use in the long run for Nintendo and Yacht Club Games, alike.

More from Indie

This has been all fun and games so far, but there’s just one last thing missing from the Shovel Knight trifecta; an appearance in a Super Smash Bros. roster! Knowing that we have yet to see any creations from the fan-requested “list” make an appearance in the titles for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS, one has to wonder if Shovel Knight will feature heavily into that future. With his trusty shovel, multitude of magical attacks, excellent soundtrack and a multitude of different looks, he would be perfect to join the roster.

Shovel Knight is currently available on Nintendo platforms at $14.99 on the eShop.
