Evo 2015: More Smash Bros. For Wii U Entrants Than Melee
We’re just over two weeks away from Evo 2015 kicking off, bringing the fighting game community to the Bally’s/Paris Las Vegas Casino & Hotel in Las Vegas, NV. As such, registration for each of the 9 separate video game titles being represented at the tournament has closed, and tournament organizer Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar has revealed the final participant counts. Ultra Street Fighter IV predictably came out on top, however the higher registrant count for Super Smash Bros. for Wii U over Melee is a bit surprising.
Final Evo 2015 participants tally:
- Ultra Street Fighter IV – 2,227
- Super Smash Bros. for Wii U – 1,926
- Super Smash Bros. Melee – 1,869
- Mortal Kombat X – 1,162
- Guilty Gear Xrd -SIGN- – 968
- Ultimate Marvel vs. Capcom 3 – 816
- Tekken 7 – 458
- Persona 4 Arena Ultimax – 437
- Killer Instinct – 397

The 1,925 people vying for 2nd place in Super Smash Bros. for Wii U make Evo 2015 the host of the largest Super Smash Bros. tournament of all time. Furthermore, should Nintendo not provide any pot bonuses for either Melee or Wii U titles, 1st place winners of either event will take home north of $11,000, as per the prize pool breakdown. Each tournament pool shows immense growth for the competitive Smash Bros. community, as Melee brought in just 970 competitors in 2014, comparatively.
Either way you look at it, Evo 2015 is shaping up to be a great event for the fighting game community. Mortal Kombat isn’t terrible anymore, Smash Bros.’ legitimacy within the FGC continues to strengthen, we get to see Tekken 7 in action in North America and Xrd almost drew in 1,000 fighters on its own. Killer Instinct, despite being last once again in participants, even showed growth despite the proclivity of PS4 fight sticks (Ultra Street Fighter IV excluded).
