You Can Now Play Triple Triad, Minus Pesky Final Fantasy VIII

Have you ever had the craving to play Triple Triad all over again, only to realize that you had to trudge through one of the lower-tier Final Fantasy titles to do so? Fear no more, as today Square Enix has launched the Final Fantasy Portal on the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store for Android. Not only does it provide a limited-time offer of a free copy of Final Fantasy 1, Triple Triad is available in the app as a free-to-play card game.

Sixteen years after the release of Final Fantasy VIII on PlayStation, Triple Triad on mobile devices acts as a celebration of all Final Fantasy titles. You can collect cards through play with AI or human opponents, allowing you to change up some of the rules or what appears in play based on your preferences. Characters from other Final Fantasy games make an appearance, adding depth and nostalgia to a game that was already ripe with it in just Final Fantasy VIII’s properties.

However, it should be noted that this is a mobile version of a Square Enix property we’re talking about, here. This free-to-play version of Triple Triad comes with usage-limited crystal system, where each match costs one to play. Crystals take 30 minutes to regenerate, so after using up all 5 you will be left waiting for up to 30 minutes to play just one match again. That is, unless you would rather pay Square Enix money to play a mobile card game that’s available to all owners of Final Fantasy VIII.
