Update: A few hours later, Bloodstained has reached its initial funding goal!

Original post:

Last week, Koji Igarashi teased something Castlevania-esque, asking fans to choose a Sword or a Whip. Today, he revealed his project–a “gothic, exploration-based action platformer” known as Bloodstained: Ritual of the Night.

Iga’s Kickstarter-funded spiritual sequel to his Castlevania games is planned for Xbox One, PS4, and PC via Steam. It has an initial funding goal of $500,000 and at the time of this posting is just over halfway there after only a few hours. Assuming this continues to go well, it will continue the trend of successful “reboots” of old series through Kickstarter, such as Mighty No. 9 and Yooka-Laylee (disclosure: author has contributed funding to Yooka-Laylee).

The game only has concept art available so far, with no gameplay images or video, indicating that very little, if anything, has been started yet. The Kickstarter estimates a shipping date of March of 2017, so fans would have to wait quite awhile to finally get their hands on this if it gets funded.

From what we can tell, Bloodstained looks awfully similar to Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, though obviously Dracula and the Belmonts won’t be showing up. Instead, Bloodstained will feature a young woman named Miriam, faced with an interesting curse:

"You are Miriam, an orphan scarred by an alchemist curse which slowly crystallizes your skin. You must battle your way through a demon-filled castle summoned by Gebel, your old friend whose body has become more crystal than flesh."

It’s hard to say much else about Bloodstained at this point. You can look at the Kickstarter page for a long list of interesting promises, provided enough crowd support exists, but until development begins, Iga’s new project is mostly hype. Still, with enough support and Iga’s expert guidance, this could be a great revival of a beloved franchise.
