Three different Resident Evil games will get re-releases on the PS4 and Xbox One this year.

In a move that is certainly going to spark rumors about a new installment in the series, Resident Evil 4, Resident Evil 5 and Resident Evil 6 will all be re-released for the PS4 and Xbox One. The news comes from the Resident Evil Youtube channel, releasing a sizzle reel of what to expect in each game as they release at different times throughout 2016.

Resident Evil 6 is the first game in line for the re-release treatment, coming March 29th. That title takes a more fragmented approach to its storytelling, offering multiple campaigns each with a main protagonist and support character. It improved upon the co-op action sensibilities of Resident Evil 5, which will be released this Summer 2016. Finally, the game that broke the classic RE conventions altogether, Resident Evil 4, will make its billionth platform re-release this Fall 2016, perhaps bookending a full year of Capcom re-releases outside Street Fighter V.

While I am more of a fan of the classic games, hence my disbelief at the reveal of Resident Evil 2 remake, I understand why these titles are getting re-packaged as opposed to Capcom just going out and developing a new title in the series. The action Resident Evil titles have, disappointingly, vastly outsold the classics, with droves of Gears of War kiddies hoping to replicate like-minded experiences in Resident Evil 6. That’s why Capcom is trying to capture a competitive audience with Umbrella Corps later this year. “Go with what you know to be successful” is a key business strategy, especially when trying to defend a possible hostile takeover.
