Starting Pokemon Heading To Super Mario Maker As Costumes
Charmander, Bulbasaur and Squirtle (starting Pokemon from Red/Blue in descending logical choice order) will act as Super Mario Maker mystery mushroom costumes.
It’s an important month for Pokemon, this February. February 27th will mark the 20th anniversary of the series, with Nintendo planning on celebrating the occasion in a multitude of ways. The latest inclusion comes from Super Mario Maker, with Charmander, Bulbasaur and Squirtle joining the game as possible Mystery Mushroom costumes for level editing and gameplay purposes. You can see for yourself in a recent “I Choose You!” Event Course demonstration how each character is represented.
Each of the Pokemon represented will play up to their abilities and themes in the Super Mario Maker special course. It starts with Bulbasaur, represented with numerous vines to climb up and down. The real first challenge comes with the Squirtle segment, where underwater Hammer Bros. and Bowser are waiting to take you out with projectiles in a tight-knit mini-course. The final section, for Charmander, has our reptilian friend jumping over gap-diminishing fireballs, rotating fire traps and a section where Charmander jumps between fire-burning engines.

To earn each character as a Mystery Mushroom costume, you will need to complete the course at that particular Pokemon. This particular Super Mario Maker stage is short, meaning it won’t be much of a pain to do over a few times to catch ’em all! (Pokemon, that is) Plus, with Pokemon Red and Blue sound effects for each Pokemon, combined with the Gym Leader victory theme playing as you reach the flagpole, the repetition should be rather pleasant.
