You Can No Longer Augment Your Deus Ex: Mankind Divided Pre-Order

Back when Deus Ex: Mankind Divided was launching its pre-order campaign, there was heavy pushback from consumers and consumer watchdogs over the gross, antagonizing pre-order campaign. Essentially, it boiled down to incentivizing pre-orders by unlocking more bonuses the more people pre-ordered the game, culminating in a final reward that sees the game release four days early. It passively encouraged those that pre-ordered the game to call others to action for self-fulfilling purposes, and was the natural progression in the ongoing nature of publisher greed.

Was.

Today, Square Enix and Eidos Montreal have taken to the Deus Ex website to announce that the “Augment Your Pre-Order” campaign has been shut down. Their original vision of the program to “give (the consumer) more choice about what you received in terms of pre-order incentives” was met with controversy, so they have decided to make any pre-orders of the Day 1 Edition of Deus Ex: Mankind Divided include all content. The game will definitely not be coming out four days earlier, however.

It highlights the unnecessary, selfish nature of the original program; it artificially held back content in a means that gave undue stress to its purchasers who already did as much as they should (if they cared to pre-order the game). Instead of splintering options between tiers, only allowing one specific item between choices at multiple levels, all pieces of content that would likely act as paid DLC to the non-pre-order purchaser is made fully available. Unfortunately, it’s hard to shake the thought that Square Enix’s marketing team will learn anything from this mistake other than “we need to rebrand our message.”

Deus Ex: Mankind Divided will launch for PC, PS4 and Xbox One on February 23, 2016.
