Dying Light Sales Surpass 5 Million, Expansion Trailer Drops

Just using common sense, the earlier in a year you release a product, the better chance it has to sell. That’s not quite the case with video games, as many avoid the dreaded release window of January due to most people making their purchases during the November and December holiday months. That’s why it’s quite a surprise that the open world zombie action title, Dying Light, has surpassed 5 million in sales. This is according to VideoGamer, who spoke to producer Tymon Smektala about it during gamescom last week.

“To be honest, I think even we are a little surprised by the scope of our success,” Smektala said. “We knew that we’d made a good game. If you are a gamer, even if you make games you are still a gamer, so we know the game is good when you feel that rush when you play.

“So we knew that Dying Light is a good game, we know it’s going to be successful, but that successful? We are in the 10 best-selling games in the US right now for the first half of the year, so tremendous success. More than 5 million copies sold.”

Indeed, Dying Light did appear in the NPD 2015’s First Half report, coming in at #7. However, NPD does not account for games sold in bundles or digitally downloaded titles, meaning that its success using those qualifications might have placed it higher on a list keeping those in mind. Regardless, for an oft-delayed game to release in one of the worst months for gaming retail to sell more than 5 million copies to date, it is still quite the accomplishment for Techland.

The upcoming Dying Light expansion, “The Following,” was officially revealed today, and will retail at $14.99 (free for Season Pass holders). There is no release date to announce, but you can check out the trailer below.
