Mortal Kombat X Is 2015’s First Half Best Seller In The US
Mortal Kombat X was released earlier this year to quite a fair surprise of both the fighting game community and the casual audience. The decidedly American fighting title was the top-selling game in the US the month it was released, it had a fairly sizeable roster at launch and saw more than 188,000 peak concurrent viewers during a tournament of the game’s Grand Finals at Evo 2015. Things continue to look up for NetherRealm Studios, as Shoryuken reminds us that, according to the NPD reports, Mortal Kombat X was the top-selling video game of 2015’s first half of the year.
Here is the complete list of the Top 10 games:
- Mortal Kombat X
- Grand Theft Auto V
- Battlefield Hardline
- Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare
- Minecraft
- Batman: Arkham Knight
- Dying Light
- NBA 2K15
- The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt
- Super Smash Bros.

It should be noted that NPD does not count games sold as part of hardware bundles, nor does it account for digital download sales. With that in mind, we would likely have seen a bump in sales of games like Dying Light and Super Smash Bros. (for 3DS users, at least). Still, it’s quite remarkable to see so many people buying into Mortal Kombat X, let alone any fighting game title. Even more amazing is that Batman: Arkham Knight comes in at the #6 spot, despite being released days before the first half of 2015 came to an end.
With that in mind, it just makes sense that the director of Furious 7 is rumored to produce a film based on the Mortal Kombat series; with Mortal Kombat X’s sales dominance, there’s really no better time to capitalize on the property. Hopefully the movie maintains the same kind of sensibilities that the game’s characters portray, while doing a good job of relaying some of the more complicated plot points. Not sure how a real actor can convince an audience of an excellent performance while spewing terms like Outworlders, NetherRealm and the Amulet of Shinnok.
