Mario Kart 8 DLC Filenames Could Hint About Future Tracks

With the upcoming slew of DLC tracks for Mario Kart 8 primed and ready for release, the focus of couch-and-online-co-op racing has decidedly turned towards Mario Kart 8 almost a year after its initial release on the Wii U. People are starting to poke around every nook and cranny to find clues about upcoming DLC information. It looks like the filenames from the last batch of downloadable tracks could provide a glimpse into what players can expect in just 10 days from now, as someone on NeoGAF has uncovered some fairly intriguing possibilities.

User Robin64 noticed in the first Mario Kart 8 DLC set contained 13 entries for tracks, instead of the 8 that were provided to players. The first 8 had filenames like “SFC_RAINBOW_ROAD” (which turned into SNES Rainbow Road) and “WII_WARIOSMINE” (Wii Wario’s Gold Mine). However, there were 5 other entries that were not playable, possibly hinting at what we can expect in the DLC #2 pack.

  • 3DS_NEOBOWSERCITY
  • GC_BABYPARK
  • WU_ANIMAL
  • WU_METRO
  • WU_WOODS

The first 3 possible Mario Kart 8 DLC tracks seem to be no-brainers. 3DS_NEOBOWSERCITY is clearly Neo Bowser City, from the Nintendo 3DS title Mario Kart 7. GC_BABYPARK is most likely Baby Park from Gamecube’s Mario Kart: Double Dash!!, a game so exciting it has two exclamation marks in its official title. WU_Animal is most definitely the Animal Crossing track we have seen in the most recent Nintendo Direct.

However, that leaves two tracks that are complete mysteries. They look to be completely new tracks, as their prefix insists that they are a new creation specifically and originally made for Mario Kart 8 on Wii U. METRO would seem to imply an urban, traffic-centric track (unless they went against current filename standards to hide a Metroid track). Woods could be anything, including Whispy Woods for Kirby or Wario’s Woods for…well, Wario. We’ll have to wait and see what Nintendo officially reveals, hopefully before the DLC actually comes out.
