Survarium Coming to Steam in April

UPDATE: A release date of April 2, 22:00 GTM+2 was given via an announcement on the game’s website. The post also teased three unique starter packs that will be on sale for a limited time following the release, and revealed that North American game servers would be launching to help facilitate the Steam debut.

Survarium, an upcoming post-apocalyptic shooter, will be coming to Steam according to an announcement on the game’s website.

The Ukrainian developer, Vostok Games, announced today that their game would be coming to the Steam distribution platform “very soon”. This move comes from the numerous requests from fans, and (one can assume) the various monetary and marketing benefits of listing your game on the most popular PC-game distribution platform.

Here’s the elevator pitch posted on their site:

"Survarium is a free2play MMOFPS game set in the near future. The game focuses on the aftermath of a massive ecological catastrophe on Earth, the reasons behind which are only vaguely known."

I was granted access to the closed beta in summer 2014, and played it religiously for several weeks. If I were to describe it using gross generic comparisons I would say it’s Call of Duty meets DayZ. You die quickly, and often aren’t even sure who killed you. The beautifully overgrown and abandoned environments allow for players to camouflage themselves, and running out in the open will lead to a swift death- it’s not for the faint of heart or the easily enraged.

Right now the only game modes are team-based PvP played on constrained maps, so it feels like a gritty Eastern-European take on the competitive FPS genre. However, earlier this year Vostok detailed their Freeplay mode which promises open-world survival gameplay, but players have yet to get their radioactive hands on it.

I’ll be keeping my eye on the game and reporting back when new features are added. If you’d like to learn more about the game, or want to join in the beta visit the Survarium website here.
