Free Multiplayer Coming To PS4 This Weekend
Whether it’s Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 or the recently released Street Fighter V, Sony wants you to try out online PS4 play for free this weekend.
Just like you shouldn’t poo-poo a nickel, free giveaways shouldn’t be looked down upon, either. Even though the majority of PS4 owners are subscribed to PlayStation Plus, Sony wants to make sure that the remaining people get a chance to check out the online multiplayer fuss. They announced today that every PS4 owner will have access to free online multiplayer from February 19th at 12:01 AM PT to February 21st at 11:59 PM PT.

While this doesn’t provide everyone with the same access to discounts or free games that PlayStation Plus offers, it does mean that those who picked up Street Fighter V this week who don’t have a current online subscription can enjoy where the majority of early content exists. Furthermore, you don’t need to sign up for a subscription at this time to enjoy online PS4 play, meaning you won’t have to quickly unsubscribe from a free trial like it most services offer.
It’s still mind-boggling that you have to pay for your internet twice to play video games on consoles, but it’s a part of doing business these days. If Sony really wanted to incentivize PlayStation Plus subscriptions for those who don’t play online games that often, they should really start to offer their early back catalog as PS Plus free games.
The fact that Knack, a game so reviled at launch, still hasn’t been given away as part of the service yet doesn’t make sense. Regardless, free is free. It’s a great time to try out PS4 games online without having to commit.
