We knew this day would eventually come, but nobody knew just how hard it would be to face the truth. The official Twitter account for GameTrailers confirmed today that they will be ceasing operations and closing down. Founded in August 2002, they had been going strong with reviews, gameplay streams, podcasts and quality original content for over 13 years. After a final livestream of Grand Theft Auto III tonight, they will be no more.

Just like their namesake, GameTrailers was most renown for the coverage of the latest sizzle reels for current and upcoming video games. Who could forget programs like Let’s All Go To The Trailers, Trailer Academy or the GT Wish-List; all of which went beyond surface level appreciation while adding insightful commentary at one of gaming’s most powerful means of building anticipation. That’s not to besmirch Bonus Round, Pop-Fiction, The Final Bosman and Pach-Attack!, offering unique looks at the gaming industry at large.

It was, unfortunately, just a matter of time before GameTrailers called it quits. After most of its senior staff members were fired right after E3 2014 (50-67% of full-time staff according to Polygon sources), right after they were bought out by Defy Media, it was actually a pleasant surprise to see great daily, weekly and special feature content pour out of GameTrailers up until today. They even posted a review of Firewatch earlier today, with staff members saying they were only given a head’s up about their firing mere hours before the announcement.

While the feelings continue to pour over, join us in watching a final GameTrailers farewell with the first game their site ever captured: Grand Theft Auto III.
