It seems like EA wasn’t content with Mirror’s Edge Catalyst taking their February 23, 2016 release slot, as it was announced by EA that Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 will be released, instead, on that very date. The announcement comes with a gameplay reveal trailer, highlighting “Grass Effect” gameplay that is certainly not a parody of any sort of BioWare space adventure RPG title whatsoever.

Releasing for the PC, PS4 and Xbox One all at the same time (as opposed to the timed exclusivity that came with the original title), Plants vs. Zombies Garden Warfare 2 will include a “Z7 Mech” inspired by the Mass Effect universe. It comes as a pre-order bonus, however, in addition to 14 different emoji character customizations that is sure to be a hit with the young whippersnappers who pick up the game.

At the very least, BioWare seems to be onboard with the side-project, with Edmonton BioWare GM Aaryn Flynn commenting on how cool the partnership is. Furthermore, the Z7 Mech for Garden Warfare 2 utilizes a gatling laser gun and uses telekinetic powers similar to that of Mass Effect characters. It will be interesting to see how much of the Mass Effect lore and story sensibility will be parodied in the game, or if it’s just the locations, skills, weapons and armor that seemed like a cool get for PopCap Games. In a game where the plants are on the offensive and the zombies are being attacked, anything is possible.
