Leaping Labrats! Day Of The Tentacle Remaster Out Early 2016
Way back at the PlayStation Experience last year, Tim Schafer of Double Fine announced that in addition to the remake of Grim Fandango, we were also getting a remaster of the classic LucasArts adventure game and follow up to Maniac Mansion, Day Of The Tentacle. Grim Fandango has been out for a good while now, but no additional news has come out about Day Of The Tentacle since that first announcement.
Finally we got an update at this past weekend’s Indicade event in Los Angeles, where the Day of The Tentacle remaster was actually playable. The remaster will be out early 2016 on Linux, Mac, PlayStation 4, PlayStation Vita and Windows PC. Sadly, no release on either Xbox One or Wii U, but given that Grim Fandango didn’t come out for either of those platforms, not a big surprise.
Double Fine also stated that they have plans to bring more Lucas Arts classics to the current gen with remakes, which is loaded with great possibilities. The early Monkey Island or Sam & Max games are probably the most obvious candidates, but being Full Throttle also has a lot of people clamoring for a remake. Personally I’d love to see Indiana Jones & The Fate Of Atlantis since that is one of only a handful of Lucas Arts games I have never played.

In my opinion, this is exactly the kind of HD remakes companies should be doing. Not games we can still currently buy on the cheap at any old brick and mortar store (or super cheap on a digital sale) from the previous generation that wouldn’r benefit from an HD remaster, but older sometimes practically forgotten games that would benefit greatly from such a release and find a new audience (and possibly even breathe new life into the series as a whole)
