NPD September 2015: A Sport To Surpass Metal Gear
Each month industry experts are given a report that details all of the consoles and software numbers sold from physical retail brick-and-mortar stores within the United States, which are then reported on by sites privileged with that sort of information. They are published from the NPD group, with this month’s numbers reporting for NPD September 2015.
Top 10 most sold physical software titles in the US, according to NPD September 2015 numbers (bracket order=most-to-least sold version):
- NBA 2K16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
- Madden NFL 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
- Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4, Xbox One, PS3, 360)
- FIFA 16 (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3)
- Destiny: The Taken King (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3)
- Super Mario Maker (Wii U)
- Disney Infinity 3.0 (360, Wii U, Xbox One, PS4, PS3)
- Mad Max (PS4, Xbox One)
- NHL 16 (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3)
- Minecraft (360, PS3, Xbox One, PS4)
Concerning the health of the industry, NPD September 2015 numbers are down across the board, unable to recover from the massive launch of Destiny 1.0 from 2014. Overall retail sales are down 9%, hardware sales are down 27% and software sales are down 3%; all year over year. Regardless, Sony enjoyed the PS4 leading both in hardware and software sales once again, even reaching the best month in the PlayStation Store’s history. Xbox One saw year over year growth in “console sales and strong engagement on Xbox Live,” while the Wii U was helped by Super Mario Maker by seeing a 110% hardware sales increase from August 2015.
It’s not shocking that NBA 2K16 was the top seller according to the NPD September 2015 report. The basketball simulation series has always been fairly solid, and has little competition in the NBA Live series. Madden NFL 16, which launched in August, surpassing Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain in sales is fairly surprising, considering how everyone’s exaggerating its success compared to blockbuster films on launch day.
