Star Fox Zero The Latest Wii U Title Pushed Into 2016

Well, that’s a bummer for Star Fox fans. The latest in the long-running scrolling shooter series will no longer be releasing on November 20, 2015, according to producer and Nintendo Creative Fellow Shigeru Miyamoto. As posted on the Nintendo Wii U Facebook page, Star Fox Zero has been delayed until Q1 2016.

The message comes from Miyamoto, stating, “We have been developing Star Fox Zero for Wii U with the aim of releasing it this year. Although we felt that the development had been progressing well, we now believe that we will need a little more time to work on areas such as the unprecedented discovery that we want players to experience in the game by using two screens, and further polishing the level designs and perfecting the tone of the cut scenes.

“While we have already reached the stage where it would be technically possible to release the title in time for the year-end holiday season, we want to polish the game a bit more so that players will be able to more smoothly grasp the new style of play that we are proposing. To the people looking forward to the launch of the game this holiday season, I am very sorry.”

In all honesty, I feel it’s a good decision by Miyamoto and Nintendo to delay Star Fox Zero. Yes, it means that an already diminished Holiday 2015 Wii U lineup is further decimated, but it also means that either Nintendo EPD or Platinum Games can actually work on improving the mind-bogglingly obtuse gyroscopic control scheme with the Wii U GamePad. As I brought up in my preview (and I am not nearly the only one to do so), it needlessly adds a layer of difficulty to the control scheme that makes it difficult to enjoy.

I’m not sure there’s a way to keep the control scheme in Star Fox Zero and make it play functionally, but at the very least Nintendo is trying to give Star Fox Zero its due diligence. A series reboot may be what the doctor ordered.
