Mighty No. 9’s Delay Apology Is Itself Delayed

facebooktwitterreddit

The Kickstarter debacle of Mighty No. 9 just keeps growing. Remember two weeks ago, when we reported that Mighty No. 9 was going to release a free trial version of the game to backers as an apology for the game being delayed in the first place? Yeah, well the delay apology has been delayed too, according to a tiny scrap of information wedged into the bottom of an unrelated blog post from the Mighty No. 9 website:

"Finally, we know that all of our fans are looking forward to the Special Demo Version we are preparing, and we just ask that you be a little more patient. The team is working on it, but some issues popped up regarding the distribution method so there is a good chance it will not be ready to launch by the 15th. We are really sorry for the inconvenience. As soon as we have more info, we will let everyone know immediately."

…Yeah. If you’ve been following the campaign at all, this information is hardly a shock. The initial game delay was only announced after rumor and speculation forced the company’s hand. The trial version as an apology wasn’t announced until weeks after that, as if an afterthought. And before Mighty No. 9 has even shipped, Inafune and his team tried another Kickstarter for an anime based on the game. It failed.

It’s sad to think that a year or so ago, Keiji Inafune was one of the more respected names in game development, well-known for his excellent work on Mega Man. Now, his project is coming to be regarded as a huge joke. Possibly the only thing that could salvage this would be if the game was just really, really good, but even so: the poor communication and repeated delays do not bode well for the success of any future projects.
