Rumor: Kingdom Hearts 2.9 Ridiculous Enough To Be True
There are a lot of Kingdom Hearts games. While fans eagerly await the third “main series” game, still arriving at some indefinite future date, there’s a wealth of titles with bizarre names that are vital to understanding the sprawling universe Square Enix has created from the successful Final Fantasy x Disney mashup. Titles like Birth By Sleep, Dream Drop Distance, 385/2 Days, and Kingdom Hearts 1.5 and 2.5 HD Remixes that make a rumored title like Kingdom Hearts 2.9 sound…well, plausible.
A LinkedIn profile page (you must be logged in to view) indicates that a Game Designer from Osaka, Japan, has worked for Square Enix on Kingdom Hearts 2.9, listed for both PlayStation 3 and 4. They state that they worked on the game for 10 months, including vague duties such as “Game idea planning and documentation”, and “Boss planning”. Also of note is that this person worked on Kingdom Hearts 3, listed as both for PS4 and Xbox One:
"Game DesignerSquare EnixAugust 2014 – June 2015(11 months) | Osaka, Osaka, Japan—“Kingdom Hearts 2.9” (PS3, PS4) Development (10 Months)-Game idea planning and documentation-Game Check and balance-Boss planning-Attraction Flow planning and documentation“Kingdom Hearts III” (PS4, Xbox One) Development (10 Months )Original-level planning, documentation and execution for 2 Worlds INCLUDING enemy, Item, secrets and event Management-Mockup Creation of 3 Worlds INCLUDING temporary Asset Creation-Game idea planning and documentation-Game Check and balance-Enemy planning and documentation-Gummi Ship system planning and documentation-Multiplayer planning and documentation-Attraction Flow planning and documentation-Main Scenario planning for 2 Worlds-Various in-Game dialogue writing-Translation and Interpretation of Contact Between Involved English and Japanese parties INCLUDING Disney and Pixar-Publicity video Recording and editing-Communication with Outsourced companies-Holding Meetings with Disney and Pixar-Team Management, Meeting Management and Proceeding Recordings"
While entirely possible this is just a big fake, the profile is linked to other profiles that seem to be legitimate, and a picture taken at E3 (that KH Insider confirmed real) indicates that a Kingdom Hearts 2.9 appeared on a schedule screen at E3, but was quickly removed. Kingdom Hearts 2.9 could easily be another collection along the same lines as the 1.5 and 2.5 HD Remixes, or it could be yet another bridge game, or some new animal entirely.
It could also just be someone on LinkedIn very convincingly capitalizing on a mistake. But with no release date for Kingdom Hearts 3 in sight, such a title may be a good idea for Square Enix. Excited fans might need another complicated piece of lore to chew on while they wait…and wait…and wait.
