NPD July 2015: Dinosaurs Are Cool When You’re Part Of A Team

Each month industry experts are given a report that details all of the consoles and software numbers sold from physical retail brick-and-mortar stores within the United States, which are then reported on by sites privileged with that sort of information. They are published from the NPD group, with this month’s numbers reporting for NPD July 2015.

Top 10 most sold physical software titles in the US, according to NPD July 2015 numbers (bracket order=most-to-least sold version):

  1. Lego: Jurassic World (360, 3DS, PS3, Xbox One, Wii U, PS4, Vita)
  2. Batman: Arkham Knight (PS4, Xbox One, PC)
  3. Minecraft (360, PS3 ,Xbox One, PS4)
  4. Grand Theft Auto V (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)
  5. Rory Mcilroy PGA Tour (PS4, Xbox One)
  6. The Elder Scrolls Online: Tamriel Unlimited (Xbox One, PS4, PC)
  7. Destiny (Xbox One, PS4, 360, PS3)
  8. Mortal Kombat X (PS4, Xbox One)
  9. FIFA 15 (PS4, 360, Xbox One, PS3, Wii, Vita, 3DS)
  10. Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare (PS4, Xbox One, 360, PS3, PC)

Per usual, the NPD July 2015 report charted very few new releases. In fact, it was only Rory McIlroy PGA Tour that saw any major action in the Top 10. The Top 10 for July was particularly strange, with Lego: Jurassic World taking the top spot over Batman: Arkham Knight despite being released roughly 2 weeks prior in June. With Xbox 360, Nintendo 3DS and PS3 sales coming ahead of the current-gen consoles, it likely symbolizes the cornering of a last-gen market hard up for new games before finally taking that dip into the PS4/Xbox One/Wii U era, while Arkham Knight selling well in unaccounted-for bundles.

Regardless, the NPD July 2015 numbers indicated a positive trend. The industry grew a modest 6% in overall sales year-to-year, and positive outlooks in hardware sales. Once again, the PS4 has outsold its Xbox One and Wii U competitors in the United States, but there’s an indication that both the PS4 and Xbox One has seen huge improvements over their last consoles’ first two years. “After 21 months, combined Xbox One and PS4 hardware unit sales are close to 50 percent higher than the combined sales of Xbox 360 and PS3 after 21 months on the market,” NPD analyst Liam Callahan notes.

Nintendo had some positive things on specific talking points within the NPD July 2015 report. Also reported by Venturebeat, software sales of Wii U games have increased 10% in this first 7 months of the year compared to the same timeframe as last year. A big part of that success belongs with Splatoon, which has accumulated almost 540,000 in the US. Compared to Japan, which has sold over 519,000 units through August 9th in a country with the population that is roughly two and a half times smaller than the US, and the results reflect a different story.

The sales of the Nintendo 3DS hardware have increased 35% over last year’s first 7 months, although a good chunk of those sales likely come from the New Nintendo 3DS iteration that came out earlier this year.
