Although the From Software formula for Action-RPG’s has been solidly excellent since Demon’s Souls, the creator of that style of gameplay, Hidetaka Miyazaki, might be looking to the future in other titles. In an interview with GameSpot, he confirmed that Dark Souls 3 is the franchise’s “turning point,” with the opportunity to look at other types of genres outside high fantasy the most likely destination for future From Software games.

“Dark Souls is my life’s work,” Miyazaki said.”Everything I came up with for Dark Souls 3 is based on my personal preferences. However, Dark Souls 3 is also actually the turning point for the franchise.” He later confirmed that he “definitely wants to bring the Miyazaki touch” to the sci-fi or mech genres that GameSpot prompted him. He also announced that he would launch “several new projects” as part of his duties as president of From Software.

With recent Dark Souls 3 gameplay at gamescom showing a natural blend between the gothic sensibilities of the Souls series and an improved pace that came from Bloodborne earlier this year, I wouldn’t be surprised to hear that it is the turning point in the creator’s eyes. Despite retaining the same darkness, storytelling through deep lore and punishing gameplay to those who are not yet patient enough, I would love to see what we can get out of Miyazaki in other genres. Plus, with Dark Souls 2, Bloodborne and Dark Souls 3 coming out in consecutive years, it seems best to give that style of game a bit of a rest from annualized releases.
