Evo 2015: Your Tekken 7 Grand Finals Winner Is…
While most of the world is still getting ready for the next Tekken battle, Japan has had an enjoyable headstart when it comes to both arcade and, therefore, tournament Tekken 7 play. The arcade-only (as of now) fighter enjoyed an all-Japan Top 8 and Grand Finals at Evo 2015, with a matchup between Nobi (sporting Dragunov) and Ao (who played as Alisa). Tensions were high, but ultimately it was Nobi who came out on top of the field of competition after a grueling, bracket-resetting match that proved too much for Ao to hold onto.

With Reepal “RIP” Parbhoo and Mark “Markman” Julio calling the play we got, perhaps, the longest Grand Finals matchup of Evo 2015. Ao came in from Winner’s Bracket, meaning he had to win just a best of 5 series of sets to take the Tekken 7 championship. Up 2-1 and just one set left to win, Nobi launched into beast mode and stole two sets in a row to win 3-2 and reset the brackets. Both competitors were back on even ground, but Ao spent no time trying to lock down his championship. Alas, fate has other plans, as Nobi came back from 2 sets down, never said never, and won three straight sets against Ao to become the ultimate underdog winner of Evo 2015. He may have been one of the most clutch competitors of the entire weekend.
Whereas Tekken Tag Tournament 2 taking precedence prior to this year, Tekken 7 looks to be a viable option once the game is opened up to more of an international audience. Yes, Evo is a North American tournament, but it also happens to be the world’s most premiere fighting game community event. Despite Tekken 7 and its scrutiny by some of the Western media, it’s possible that US won’t be as free as they’ve been in Ultra Street Fighter IV has in recent years.
