E3 2015: Shenmue 3 Comes To Kickstarter

facebooktwitterreddit

In an announcement that completes the holy trinity of Sony announcements, Sony pulled off the unthinkable in bringing Shenmue creator Yu Suzuki to announce a Kickstarter for Shenmue 3. The announcement was so hype that Kickstarter couldn’t handle the load of people rushing to give him “all the money,” with the website failing to load as of press time. Further information is available here.

Shenmue 3 will ask for $2,000,000 in funding in order to “Save Shenmue.” It will likely take a LOT more in funding (from outside sources) to provide the amount of money necessary to make a full-fledged Shenmue 3, but it’s a start. The game has a number of stretch goals, including Shenmue 1 and 2 cinematic shorts, multiple languages, skill tree addition and 5 Baisha Villiage minigames. So far, the most they’re looking for is $4 million, but it will likely be expanded should interest inevitably rise.

The Shenmue 3 Kickstarter project features a who’s who of Japanese game development. Kicking off with game director and producer Yu Suzuki himself, joining him will be lead programmers, character design artists, and environment designers who worked on Shenmue titles of the past. Furthermore, the VA for Ryo and the composer who brought us Shenmue 1 & 2 songs, Ryuji Iuchi, will also be part of the crew.
