In a surprise announcement at the end of this evening’s Treehouse, Shigesato Itoi revealed that Earthbound Beginnings has arrived on the Wii U Virtual Console, and will be available later today. You can watch the trailer for the game below:

Earthbound Beginnings, known previously as Mother, is the first game in the Mother series and comes before Earthbound in the timeline. Originally released on the Famicom, with a rerelease on the GBA, it has only ever been available in Japan until now. Earthbound Beginnings is a quirky RPG that tells the story of a young boy named Ninten with psychic powers, who fights against aliens and other strange creatures as he investigates the mystery behind his missing parents.

It’s great to see the Mother series getting more love from Nintendo, especially considering the fan love of Ness and Lucas in spite of the games’ age. Earthbound is a cult classic, and the other Mother games have been requested in the west for a long time. Maybe we’ll get Mother 3 eventually, to complete the trilogy?

Earthbound Beginnings should be available sometime today on the Virtual Console through the Nintendo Wii U eShop. The price is unknown as of yet, but currently Earthbound runs for $9.99 USD.
