New stages are coming to Smash!

In this morning’s Smash Bros. mini-Direct, a whole slew of new features and content were announced. Within their ranks were quite a few new stages – five in total! They’re not all going to be available right away, but these new and classic stages will give Smashers a whole lot of new places to fight it out. Let’s take a look!

Classic Stages

The original Super Smash Bros. from N64 days is dear to everyone’s hearts, and Sakurai clearly hasn’t forgotten that. During the Direct, he announced three classic N64 stages that will be available in Smash Bros. for Wii U and 3DS! The first announced was Dream Land. In case you had finally gotten the Gourmet Race theme out of your head, it’s back to haunt your dreams again in this faithful recreation of the original stage. It’s available today, and also has an Omega version included with it. Unfortunately, it’s not free – you’ll be shelling out $1.99 to get the stage on one system, or $2.99 on both. Hyrule Castle and Peach’s Castle were also teased as stages that will be available in the future, likely at the same price point. Their tease highlighted one great little tidbit – the moving platform at the bottom of Peach’s Castle is now ledge-grabbable! The days of just barely missing the platform as it slowly slides away from you are over.

One of the all-time favorite stages is back.

New Stages

Two completely new Smash Bros. stages were shown off as well. The Miiverse stage has a fairly simple setup – the classic three platform arrangement – with one huge new addition. While players fight, Miiverse posts containing pictures of each character competing will show up! Individual Miiverse communities for each character have been opened, so if you’re the artistic type that wants to contribute a drawing of your favorite character, now’s your time to shine! The Miiverse stage is available free to all, so you can start enjoying it right away!

In case you ever wanted a cheering section!

The last stage announced came as a bit of a surprise (to those who weren’t spoiled by yesterday’s leaks): Suzaku Castle, from Street Fighter 2! Announced alongside Ryu, this stage features classic music that changes as the match timer runs out and breakable signs. The stage has clearly gotten a lot of love – it looks great. If you want it, you’re going to have to buy Ryu as well, though: the stage and character come bundled together at $5.99 for one console, or $6.99 for both.

The best part? Miiverse, Dream Land, and Suzaku Castle are all available today! Right now! If the eShop isn’t swamped (and it probably is) you should be able to buy and download them right away, but if you have trouble, they’ll be waiting for you later when the hype cools down.
