Apparently, Porn Companies Love Ganondorf

The advent and success of eSports means that plenty of companies are stepping up to sponsor teams and players. Professional DotA and League of Legends teams frequently have corporate sponsors sending them merchandise and other perks in return for advertising to the gaming community. Super Smash Bros players are starting to feel the corporate support, too, including sponsorships from a curious (if inevitable) source.

Two popular Melee contenders: Bizzarro Flame and Coastward, have recently accepted sponsorships from porn companies. Bizzarro Flame, known for his dramatic playstyle and bringing opponents down with unnecessarily flashy moves, has been sponsored by Team YP, which is affiliated with YouPorn. Coastward was sponsored by FAKKU, an English hentai website. (Both links are to safe sources, but be warned: if you look up either company’s website, it may be NSFW). What is most interesting is that both of these players are known for their skill in Super Smash Bros Melee as Ganondorf, of all characters.

Here’s Bizzarro Flame at EVO 2013, being super flashy with his kills:

The humor here is that some of Ganondorf’s moves tend to be…a bit awkward, especially in Melee. Captain Falcon is really the brunt of most awkward Smash Bros jokes, but in Melee Ganondorf is a Captain Falcon clone with a bit more weight to him. And, well, just listen to his audio:

Fortunately, it seems that both players are handling the sponsorship with good taste and humor, keeping competitive Smash a space where parents aren’t worried for the younger players, and treating the sponsorship in a celebratory fashion. This isn’t the first time porn companies have sponsored eSports, and it certainly won’t be the last as they grow in popularity.

Especially with studs like Ganondorf running around the playing field.
