Chris Avellone Has Left Obsidian Entertainment

Well, this certainly is a bummer. Just days before E3 2015 is set to kick off, famed game designer Chris Avellone has left Obsidian Entertainment. He has informed his followers as such on Twitter, cutting into the sadness with a bit of his patented humor.

What hasn’t Chris Avellone done for Obsidian, let alone the RPG as we know it in the Western world? He was a designer for Star Wars: Knights of the Old Republic II – The Sith Lords, Neverwinter Nights 2, Wasteland 2, writer for Fallout: New Vegas and designed Planescape: Torment and Baldur’s Gate: Dark Alliance before then. While I’m hopeful that this is not nearly the end for such a great creative mind in the video games industry, even if he were to leave this side of games production forever starting today, his legacy would already be secured in its excellence.

Update: In an email to Eurogamer, Chris Avellone not only confirmed his departure from Obsidian, but provided a brief glimpse of hope for more of his works going forward. “On the future, I’m off to pursue new projects, but I can’t say anything more at this time beyond life is short, and the ideas keep growing.”

Regardless, it’s got to be a tough day for Obsidian. With Pillars of Eternity launching earlier this year, it’s not like the company has entirely gone into a rut. However, considering that they almost had to shut down entirely before the Project Eternity Kickstarter, any uncertainty surrounding the studio can only hurt.
