E3 2015: New Plants vs Zombies Title To Be Revealed

In an industry known for its impressive cinematics used in its reveal trailers, PopCap Games has decided to opt for the “hearing is believing” route. Just a week before the Xbox E3 2015 Briefing comes a no-visuals, audio-focused teaser for a new Plants vs Zombies title, hinting strongly at yet another timed exclusive Garden-Warfare-variety title.

There’s not much to this Plants vs Zombies tease that would give away the plot or gameplay elements. Starting off with a “put on headphones” prompt, we hear stereoscopic sound of a radio frequency tuning in, what sounds like lasers whipping back and forth, both cartoonish plants and cartoonish zombies yelling out battle cries, the whizzing of what sounds like a floating vehicle, a charged beam of energy, a gatling gun of energy beams and, of course, a goat whelp to cap it off. It ends with a promise of a Plants vs Zombies exclusive worldwide reveal during the Xbox E3 2015 Briefing on Monday, using that Xbox media font typical of the Xbox Wire media page.

While I’m sure Microsoft is glad to have a timed (or full) exclusive in a massively popular mobile gaming franchise going to the console route, I’m never quite sure why we needed teasers like this in the first place. It’s not like this is a long-awaited title like Fallout 4; confirming a new Plants vs Zombies game coming to Xbox before revealing actual cinematics or gameplay at E3 a week later just seems pointless, especially if we don’t get to see anything about it. It defeats the element of surprise; something that E3 attendees and viewers tend to appreciate.
