Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games Announced

Well, isn’t this a surprise! After the mediocre effort that went into Mario & Sonic at the Sochi 2014 Olympic Games, Nintendo is back for more. That’s right, just over a year before the 2016 Olympic Games kick off in Brazil, Nintendo has announced they will be chronicling the events in video game form with Mario & Sonic at the Rio de Janeiro 2016 Olympic Games. The announcement comes during today’s Nintendo Direct Micro; also a surprise for all parties involved not named Nintendo.

Coming to both the Nintendo 3DS and the Nintendo Wii U, Mario & Sonic at the Rio 2016 Olympic Games will feature a multitude of Olympic sports, both classic and new. For example, Rugby Sevens will be debuting as an Olympic event next year, so it only makes sense if Mario, Sonic and the gang participate, as well (only on the Wii U version). Further in-game sports shown off during today’s Nintendo Direct include the 100m dash, rhythmic gymnastics, table tennis, futbol, beach volleyball, and gold (only on the 3DS version).

While I understand diversifying your titles by making the Wii U and 3DS versions of Mario & Sonic Rio 2016 different, doing so by making specific games exclusive to certain platforms seems a bit unfair. Not everyone who owns a Nintendo 3DS owns a Wii U (even if the inverse of that might seem true), so holding back Mario playing golf from the Wii U once again in favor for the Nintendo 3DS will seem decidedly harsh. Perhaps it’s who will be developing these titles that is behind such decisions, however it doesn’t reflect well for Nintendo.
