Nintendo World Tournament Not A World Tournament At All

Last week, Nintendo unveiled its plans for E3, including the triumphant return of the Nintendo World Tournament from days of yore. The tournament hasn’t been around since 1990, and back then featured players from all over the world competing in classic Nintendo titles.

For all the excitement the silly Nintendo promo video started up, the hype fell flat this morning when Nintendo demonstrated that its “world tournament” wasn’t a world tournament at all. It’s just a United States tournament, and a very limited one at that.

According to NintendoFuse, World Tournament qualifying events will be occurring only in eight locations:

"The qualifying events will take place from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. local time at Best Buy stores at the following locations:1717 Harrison St.San Francisco, CA3675 Pacific Coast HighwayTorrance, CA10760 NW 17th St.Miami, FL900 E. Golf RoadSchaumburg, IL12905 Elm Creek Blvd. NMaple Grove, MN5001 Northern Blvd.Long Island City, NY9378 N. Central ExpresswayDallas, TX2214 S. 48th St.Tacoma, WA"

Yikes. Not much there. No love for the midwest and not much for the east unless you’re in New York or way south. Furthermore, apparently the tournament is just using the championship mode from NES Remix. So competitors will be playing Super Mario Bros., Super Mario Bros. 3, and Dr. Mario. That’s it.

For a company with so many games and so much potential, why limit this tournament so much? Why not bring both classic and modern games to the competition? Nintendo has such an expansive library of choices, this tiny sampling seems ridiculous. Furthermore, the location limitation is incredibly frustrating (and a misnomer to boot) to anyone who had dreams of competing and doesn’t live in one of those major cities.

Sigh. Oh Nintendo.
