Playtonic Games Introduces Yooka-Laylee
Playtonic Games, an indie studio made up of former Rare developers, has just revealed the title characters of their current project to IGN. Meet Yooka and Laylee, the stars of…well, Yooka-Laylee:
Yooka-Laylee is a platforming spiritual successor to Rare’s Banjo-Kazooie. The chameleon-bat pair resembles Banjo and Kazooie and was even designed by the same creator, Steve Mayles. Yooka can use his tongue as a grappling hook, and Laylee can carry Yooka through the air for a short time.
From the Playtonic Games website:
"Yooka-Laylee (previously ‘Project Ukulele’) is an all-new 3D platformer from the creative talent behind the Banjo-Kazooie and Donkey Kong Country games. We’ve come together to form Playtonic Games and create a spiritual successor to our most cherished work from the past! Our new heroes, Yooka (the green one) and Laylee (the wisecracking bat with big nose) were conceptualised from the ground up for stellar platforming gameplay, created by the same character artist behind the rebooted Donkey Kong family and legendary N64 heroes Banjo and Kazooie. Let’s collect some golden trinkets!"
Yooka-Laylee will be a Kickstarter-funded title, and will appear there in less than 24 hours, on May 1st. The goal is to release the game, eventually, for Windows, Mac, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and Wii U, though the timing and amount of platforms depends on its success on Kickstarter. The developers also have plans for extra soundtracks and art.
Already the team has a huge following, and it’s hard to imagine this not being fully funded above and beyond expectations. It will be exciting to see what Playtonic has to offer in this modern throwback to the Rare platformers many of us loved as kids.
