Charles Dance Talks The Witcher 3, Is Awesome

There is something to be said about getting prolific actors to appear in video games, no matter what the reason is. Liam Neeson and Matthew Perry both appeared in the Fallout series, even though it was Perry who was an ardent fan of the series. Actors are actors, and will usually give it their best shot, no matter what the project. That’s what makes Charles Dance, portrayer of Tywin Lannister on HBO’s Game of Thrones, such an interesting choice to voice a prominent character in CD Projekt RED’s upcoming title, The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt. Today, the game’s creative team released a video (Warning: Age Gate), speaking to Dance about his time working on the game’s voice acting team.

He will be playing Emhyr var Emreis, a ruthless and powerful Emperor of the Nilfgaardian Empire. What makes Dance’s character in The Witcher 3 similar to his Game of Thrones counterpart is his reserved but confident personality, with the ability to command attention and respect in as few words as necessary. Emhyr is the one who tasks Geralt with the game’s overarching quest; to find the Child of Prophecy and return her to the Emperor, where she will be dealt with swiftly.

What I like most about this promotional video is the amount of respect Charles Dance has for the production of The Witcher 3. Even for his first video game voice acting role, you can tell that he sees how it works through its cinematic cutscenes similarly to that of television or film. I’m sure that he may never even play the finished game in his life, but the man who so brilliantly portrayed Dracula isn’t here to scoff at the differences between the mediums of art. Instead, he takes excitement in his role, no matter how much out of his comfort zone it takes him.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt will be released on PC, PS4 and Xbox One on May 19.
