Star Wars Digital Movie Collection Offers Xbox Bonuses

When you buy a popular film franchise from its owner for $4 billion, you don’t go about handling the intellectual property half-cocked. Disney announced late last night that they will be releasing the Star Wars movies, for the first time, digitally and in HD, on April 10th. Why, you ask, is this a story on a gaming website? Not only is Xbox Video one of the few named sources where you can download the Star Wars movies, the Major Nelson blog details some of the exclusive bonus incentives Microsoft is offering for downloading the movies through Xbox Video.

Two offers have to do with Xbox-related games and services. First comes an R2-D2 avatar companion, aiming to provide his classic charm within your Xbox Live happenings. The second comes with a free Star Wars Pinball Pack, good for use in the free-to-play Pinball FX 2 game, currently available on the Xbox One and Xbox 360. Finally, those who pre-purchase the Star Wars Saga on Xbox Video get a 60-ish second sneak peak at all the bonus material that comes with the Star Wars Digital Movie Collection right after the pre-purchase is made. The videos themselves will be added to users’ collections on April 10th.

As someone who thoroughly enjoyed one of the Star Wars pinball machines for a full day in Florida (in recovery of a massive sunburn), I can’t help but be intrigued about the offer. However, $100 USD ($119 CAD) to buy all the movies in one go just for a pinball pack, an avatar I wouldn’t use and 60 seconds of content I can wait the 3 days to see by myself otherwise seems to be too high a price for what is offered. Especially seeing how most Star Wars fans already own the movies in one physical form or another by now, including Blu-Ray. If the Star Wars Digital Movie Collection consist of HD versions of the original Star Wars cuts? Then you might be talking!

Update: I forgot to mention the Star Wars Digital Movie Collection is not just available on Xbox Video. As indicated in the TV spot, the Star Wars Saga will also be coming to iTunes, Amazon (through the Amazon Instant Video app), Google Play, VUDU, Verizon FiOS and Disney Movies Anywhere. No word yet on whether it will come to Sony or Nintendo dedicated digital apps at this time.
