Kojima Still Involved With Metal Gear Solid V, Konami To Continue Franchise

Yesterday, we all heard the upsetting rumors that Hideo Kojima, director of Metal Gear Solid, would be leaving Konami at the end of the year when his contract is up, along with several other senior staffers. The exact reason for, and confirmation of his departure remains unknown.

Today Konami confirmed, via their website, that Kojima will remain involved in the development of Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain, in spite of their attempts to wipe his name from Metal Gear Solid-related content and information. The statement from Konami is predictably vague:

"The latest title in the METAL GEAR series, “METAL GEAR SOLID V: THE PHANTOM PAIN” (below, “MGSV: TPP”), will be released as planned starting on Tuesday, September 1, 2015 in North America, Latin America, and Europe, followed by Japan and Asia on Wednesday, September 2. Hideo Kojima will remain involved throughout."

The announcement goes on to say that they will be searching for new staff members to lead the development of future games in the Metal Gear series, confirming that they have already “resolved to develop a new ‘METAL GEAR’ title.”

This is good news for fans of the franchise who were worried that this would be the end, but it also leads to plenty of questions. The vague announcement from Konami indicates that the rumors about Kojima’s departure are indeed true, and without the senior development team responsible for the other Metal Gear games, who knows where the series could go, or whether the overall quality or structure of the games will change for good or bad? Hopefully Konami pulls together a strong team to continue the franchise.
