Rory McIlroy PGA Tour: A New Face To A Storied Franchise

Long are the days of Tiger Woods’ dominance as a golfer. Although he will always have an outstanding 14 major championships, the most recent comes from the US Open in 2008. After years of him being the sole face of golf in the mainstream media, the passing of the guard begins in the realm of video games. Electronic Arts has announced that this June, golf gamers can expect a new title in Rory McIlroy PGA Tour.

Seemingly odd in theory, Rory McIlroy PGA Tour will be the first EA Sports title to take advantage of the Frostbite engine. Instead of using it to recreate monstrous explosion like in EA’s many FPS titles, the engine will be used more to refine the aesthetics of the many golf courses players have come to know over the years. That doesn’t mean that it will be strictly straight-up stuffy golf play, however, as a Golf Without Limit mode allows for play in both real-world courses and in fantasy locations. Furthermore, with the move to next-gen consoles, EA Sports aims to provide “zero wait times” between playing holes, with entire courses being loaded it at the beginning of play.

EA Sports has more game modes in store for players, with information to be shared as development of Rory McIlroy PGA Tour progresses. To me, it seems like the perfect time to bring in a golf game to the masses. We already have one fair look at PGA golf play on next-gen consoles, and golf fans should be craving for something in a more polished state as a result. With Tiger Woods out of the limelight, there are a lot of ways that EA can take their golf franchise. It’s been a while since they’ve locked down a true hole-in-one.

Rory McIlroy PGA Tour is headed for the PS4 and Xbox One this June.
