Mortal Kombat X Eyes Johnny Cage, Sonya Blade Returns

Levity. Flashy. Douchery. Those are just some of the basic tenets that make up the character of Johnny Cage, who was just confirmed by NetherRealm Studios as a character in the upcoming Mortal Kombat X. His ex-wife, Sonya Blade, will also be playable, with key parts to play in the game’s Story Mode, along with their daughter, Cassie Cage. The hijinx of the Cage family are on full display in a recent trailer, highlighting their collective dysfunction and combat maneuvers.

Johnny Cage, even in his advanced age, cannot help but be the cocky aggressor we have come to know and (begrudgingly) love over the past few decades. Sonya continues to hold her own, often shown not having the time to deal with Cage’s quips. Cassie, meanwhile, combines the traits of her parents in combat, using a mix of grab moves, launches, kicks and even uses dual pistols for maximum damage. We end off the trailer with a great capper tag, showing that Mortal Kombat X won’t be afraid to get sillier than its current image suggests.

Combat-wise, Johnny Cage and Sonya both bring a lot of their usual maneuvers in Mortal Kombat X. Knowing the changes coming with alternate play styles and features, however, we know that it’s not just a simple re-skin for these characters coming to yet another game. Still, it will be intriguing to see how well versed the story mode will get with these characters, seeing as Cassie Cage and a slew of legacy sons and daughters from famed Mortal Kombat legends are integral to the plot.

Mortal Kombat X is coming out on PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360 on April 14th.
