RollerCoaster Tycoon World Gameplay Trailer Is… Something

It is games like ScreamRide that had me clamoring for a proper roller coaster simulation entry to be released. No, not free-to-play, mobile-centric offerings; an actual new, proper RollerCoaster Tycoon. Today I eat my words, as Atari revealed their first gameplay teaser of RollerCoaster Tycoon World at GDC 2015.

Outside of the computer-generated video off the top, the artistry, animation and gameplay style on display is reminiscent of RollerCoaster Tycoon 3. Unfortunately, that game came out almost a decade ago, while RollerCoaster Tycoon World is planned on being releasing later this year. Anything with a straight line is jagged with poor anti-aliasing, textures are simple, destruction physics are rudimentary, motion blur is heavy and the framerate dips are noticeable. In the first ever reveal of a new game in a respected franchise, no less.

There will, however, be new gameplay features coming to RollerCoaster Tycoon that haven’t been available to the series. For the first time, tracks can be fully manipulated in a creative 3D space. Pre-built park assets will let you create anything to your hearts desires, and a post-launch update will allow you to create custom scenery. Plus, there will be a multitude of options that will allow you to team up with friends to play co-operatively or try out their parks.

I understand that Atari are not in the position to throw tens of millions of dollars into projects anymore; not with their current financial situation. If this is the best they can do with a series that millions have come to know and love, then imagine how people would view the reimagining of the Asteroids franchise as it approaches a new Early Access title? What hope I had for the roller coaster genre has been exceedingly dashed in an instant. Between now and launch, I hope Atari can prove my fears wrong
