HBO GO App Finally Ready For PS4

It’s been in the works for a long time, but the day has finally come. The PlayStation Blog has announced that the HBO GO app for PS4 will launch later today, bring home quality box office-level entertainment to a new community of PlayStation users.

Functioning similarly to the PS3 version, users must authenticate their gaming console with HBO through their cable or satellite provider. Once completed, those who are signed up with HBO GO will have open on-demand access to shows like Silicon Valley, True Detective, Veep, Girls and Game of Thrones. In fact, the timing of this announcement couldn’t be better, with Game of Thrones Season 5 starting up on April 12th.

It’s not just serialized comedy and drama shows available on HBO GO through the PS4 app. Award-winning documentaries, including the Oscar-winning Citizenfour, are possible to watch through the program. Comedy specials from the likes of legends like Mel Brooks can be viewed. Hell, even musical performances through the lens of the Foo Fighters’ Sonic Highways concert series will stream directly to the PS4.

It’s a long overdue move, as HBO GO had been launched on the Xbox One last year. With Xbox Live Gold no longer required to view such entertainment apps (unlike the case on the Xbox 360), it seemed like the scales were tipping between the two systems’ app infrastructure. With the PS4 focused more on gaming experience over software support, I’m still surprised it took this long. Better late than never!
