That’s right, Fable Legends, the 4v1 multi-player entry in the Fable series will cost you nothing to play. Whenever the game finally comes out (still no actual release date beyond “2015”), you can simply download it for your Xbox One or PC free of charge. Kotaku UK claims there will be a “story’s worth” of quests with that initial download and additional free episodic content will be released every few months.

But of course not everything in Fable Legends is free. You will have access to 4 starting heroes that rotate out for new characters every two weeks. The characters you use will eventually come back into rotation and keep all gold, XP, etc that you got for them so you won’t start all over again, but if you want to continually use the same character, you can simply pay to unlock them. This can be accomplished with real money or in-game money. This works similarly for villains. You can also buy cosmetic items as well. Pretty typical for a F2P game and nothing sounds like a rip–off, but of course that may depend on the pricing structure.

Fable Legends Creative director David Eckleberry had this to say about the game’s Free-To-Play model:

"The right version of F2P is a very good thing for the world. The wrong version is kind of an abomination, but if you’re very fair to your players and they can play as much as they want, then it seems right."

Admittedly given Fable Legends structure I’m way more likely to check it out as a free game that I can put money into if I wish than something I paid up front for, so this makes me pretty likely to at least try it. Again, there is no solid release date for Fable Legends, but yo can apply for the beta right here.
