Usually, at GameSided we like to let you in on definitive answers and information concerning video gaming and gaming events. However, surrounding the rules of Super Smash Bros. for Wii U at Evo 2015, things are looking tentative at best. Right now, according to the event organizers and reported by Shoryuken, custom moves look to be coming to the upcoming tournament.

Absent for recent major Smash Bros tournaments, it seems to be a move made in order to test the waters for the community at large. “The greater community seems to want custom movesets, so I gave them until March 27 to figure it out, then we are locking them in,” Evo co-founder Joey “Mr. Wizard” Cuellar relayed. “We will do what the community wants to do in the end.”

Considering the brutal crowd support that Super Smash Bros. for Wii U received at Apex 2014, with the crowd chanting for Melee as the winner of that tournament was being crowned, anything to shake things up seems to be a great idea. Balance, of course, will prove to be the most difficult aspect for bringing specials to Evo 2015, as Pikmin is beginning to prove. However, knowing just how deeply invested people in the FGC can get into making things work, hopefully custom moves will make the March 27th cut.

Think about it this way; Super Smash Bros. for Wii U will never live to be as fast-paced as Melee is. Certain people are going to prefer that style of play, no matter what. At the very least, by opening up custom moves we can see a lot wider range of styles and tech at work. On the other hand, depending on how complicated matchups can get, we may begin to see a lot more coaching out of players in tournament play, which really drags the action to a halt.

It will be intriguing to see how the Smash Bros. for Wii U presence in tournaments plays out in the years ahead.
