No, The Last Guardian Isn’t Canceled

facebooktwitterreddit

There was a lot of scuttlebutt going around yesterday surrounding the trademark abandonment of The Last Guardian. Noticed first on NeoGAF, fear, uncertainty and doubt about the current state of the project permeated throughout the gaming community. Some were holding out hope that the game is still in development and is being renamed, others wanted to be spared from the continued stringing along from Sony and just want the project to be mercifully cared. Today belongs to the first group, as Sony has confirmed to GameSpot that The Last Guardian is still in development.

As much as there is a little bit of rejoice to be had, there’s nothing quite that new to report. The Sony representative stated that Sony “can confirm that The Last Guardian is still in development.” We haven’t yet got an official confirmation over the current console aimed for the completed development of the game, even though game creator Fumito Ueda relayed that the game is “making progress under completely new conditions.” The current hypothesis is that the game will, at the very least, head to the PS4 as well as the PS3.

While I’m solidly in the camp that the game is in development hell, and that Sony isn’t playing any macho head games with Team Ico fans, we’re at the point where I would also be happy to hear that The Last Guardian is canceled. After its PS3 announcement at E3 2009, we’re more than five years into the game’s “development” and subsequent hype from the hardcore gaming community. That’s way too long for the final product to hold up to its extreme expectations, the ones that come with a production cycle closer to a decade than not.

The Last Guardian, for those who are concerned, was last slated to be released on the PS3. The game will either come out when it’s ready or be formally canceled with a statement by Sony if the time comes.
