Resident Evil HD Breaks Digital Download Records
While exact numbers haven’t been given out, it’s a tremendous day for fans of the old-school Resident Evil games and style of gameplay. The recent HD remaster of the Gamecube “REmake” of Resident Evil has just been confirmed by Capcom (via press release) to be their fastest selling digital title across North America and Europe in company history. Furthermore (and more importantly), it also broke the record for “biggest selling day one digital title on the PlayStation Network.”
“It’s been great to see so many positive comments from fans that have enjoyed this new release,” Resident Evil HD producer Yoshiaki Hirabyashi said. “The team here at Capcom Japan have worked hard to bring the game to the latest generation of consoles and we are thrilled at this news on its performance.”

As someone who greatly appreciated the return to basics for the Resident Evil series in my recent review, I was fairly certain that a new audiences wouldn’t appreciate the tight level design of the Spencer Mansion, nor its punishing survival horror mechanics like ammo conservation and limited save mechanics. It should be a strong indicator to Capcom that there’s a market for a true survival horror experience that the recent Resident Evil titles just haven’t captured, with their focus on action in order to capture that wider audience.
With Resident Evil Zero more than likely to also receive an HD remaster treatment in the coming months/years, the ultimate wish for many who appreciate the classic approach to core gameplay still remains in a Resident Evil 2 remake. It would require a lot more effort to get off of the ground than what the Resident Evil HD necessitated (upscaled graphics, overhaul of a limited number of areas), but considering it’s possibly the series’ best title of all time, it should be worth it. If fans are buying Resident Evil in January (typically a dry sales month) and are breaking PSN sales records in the process, then there’s promise in the endeavor.
Resident Evil HD is available now on the PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360. Get it on the PC if you want to experience the game in 60 FPS.
