Super Smash Bros for Wii U Opening Cinematic Is…Okay

As an awesome precursor to next month’s action, IGN recently released a video of the opening cinematic for Super Smash Bros for Wii U. The results are…okay. Not much more than that, especially when comparing to the opening movies of past Super Smash Bros games.

More from Nintendo

The Super Smash Bros opening sequence certainly has the air of game director Masahiro Sakurai’s charm, showcasing each of the game’s fighters in an introductory way. I believe it’s the presentation of showing combat clips mixed in with the reveal/introduction videos of each character that skew its overall feel to more of a retail store marketing demo. The intention of the in-game video looks to entice people to buy the game, not to appeal to those who already bought the game.

Don’t get me wrong; Nintendo seems to be banking on Super Smash Bros for Wii U and Pokemon ORAS this holiday season, releasing both titles on November 21st (one week before Black Friday). They need to sell their games well this season to make up for financial losses as of late. It’s just that when you consider how excellent the opening cinematics for other Smash Bros games are, this one seems to just do an average job. Considering that of all pre-release footage and information we know about Super Smash Bros for Wii U this seems to be the least exciting piece of media, however, is a very welcome sign of things to come for the remaining 99% of the game.

Super Smash Bros for Wii U will be released on November 21st here in North America.
