Yoshi’s Woolly World
Developer: Good-Feel
Publisher: Nintendo
Platform: Wii U
Release Date: October 16, 2015 (NA)
It’s been a long time since we’ve seen a good Yoshi game featuring Baby Bowser and Kamek working together for nefarious means, and it only makes sense that it comes in an acutely artsy package. Yoshi’s Woolly World uses its wool-based aesthetic not just as an interesting set design choice, but it breathes life into monster design, allowing for a vibrant set of challenges facing Yoshi and friends in the journey ahead.
While being woolly is certainly integral, how it feeds into gameplay evolves the series’ standard. Thanks to advances in hardware, we can see shadows and lighting take into effect in a way that obfuscates, hides and detracts from the mission. Having to land on platforms that aren’t even there yet until a shadow is cast along a passing light plays into this bump in difficulty, which helps to take the gameplay Yoshi’s Woolly World that one extra step further.
