Philadelphia Phillies
It says that the Phillies climbed their way out of terribleness into mediocrity through pitching, but it doesn’t seem right. They tried to bring back their 2009 rotation goodness in a half-assed manner, with Cole Hamels and Jeff Samardzija sporting identical 2.88 ERA’s. They both pitched over 200 innings, walked 60 or 62 batters and struck out 199 batters. In all attempts to find the answers, red herrings like Jonathan Papelbon and his 40 save, 11 blown save, 3.88 season seemed to bring things back to normal.

Speaking of normal, should-be-normal moves like getting rid of Ryan Howard in favor of Darin Ruf paid off in the 2015 MLB season simulation. He’s still relatively green with his .216/.299/.399/.691 OPS line over 400 AB’s this past year, but saving tens of million of dollars in the process seemed like the sure bet. Another sure bet is Chase Utley and his team-leading .772 OPS, 21 long balls and 70 RBI. He may still have the bat speed, but in attempting to steal base last year, he was successful just half of the time. His 11 SB also led the team, one with a limited amount of players who can hit the home run, steal bases, get on base or score runs. How they broke even on their record is beyond me.
