Tonight’s South Park Features PewDiePie
This week’s South Park episode, “#REHASH,” is intriguing in a variety of ways. Most importantly to the show, we will see this season’s ongoing continuity nods continue, as a synopsis of tonight’s episode involves some familiar storylines. However, it will also see a cameo appearance by Youtube’s most subscribed (and polarizing) personality in PewDiePie.

As explained on the South Park blog, Kyle feels a bit out of touch with the new generation that he feels “is passing him by.” “Kyle can’t figure out why Ike and his friends want to watch people comment on things going on around them rather than experience it for themselves,” the press release for tonight’s episode states. “Meanwhile, the Marsh family needs money after Stan spent it all on freemium games so, Randy is forced to perform live to bring in some cash.”
As you can see below, Cartman appears to be producing a “Let’s Play”-style web show, in which he comments on his friends commenting about Call of Duty. It feeds into Kyle’s disappointment on observance over experience, something that those who oppose the concept of watching let’s play videos on Youtube will attest to. No matter what side of the coin you’re on, this season of South Park has been consistently funny, and it will be interesting to see how lightly or harshly PewDiePie will be treated on the show.
Now that Matt Stone and Trey Parker are harkening back to their Freemium episode as well, not only are issues within gaming a constant theme this year, but so is the insistence that Randy Marsh is, in fact, Lorde. That’s a canon I can get behind! Tonight’s episode, “#REHASH,” will appear on Comedy Central at 10 PM EST.
