Dragon Age: Inquisition Runs 1080p On PS4, 900p On Xbox One

What will essentially be your “shots fired” news story of the day, the Dragon Age: Inquisition Twitter account recently tweeted out the confirmed resolutions for the PS4 and Xbox One versions of the game. The PS4 will hit 1080p, while the Xbox One will be at 900p. As much as that is important for consumers to know about the resolution outputs of their games, the sentence that comes afterward is the most telling about their thoughts of multiplatform development.

That’s right, “We maximized the current potential of each platform.” While some may see that as a shot at Microsoft over the Xbox One’s current hardware developmental capabilities, contextually it makes more sense as a jab at Ubisoft. Recently, a producer said both the PS4 and Xbox One versions of Assassin’s Creed Unity will run at 900p and that the versions were locked “at the same specs to avoid all the debates and stuff.” It’s clear that this was sent out as both a message to alleviate concerned PS4 fans, as well as get a dig at Ubisoft’s recent statements.

This isn’t the first time that another studio has taken shots at Ubisoft over events surrounding Assassin’s Creed Unity. A few weeks ago, a Sunset Overdrive update video confirmed you can play both genders by showing a protagonist in a cloak similar to those that protagonists in Assassin’s Creed games wear. This is in retaliation after Ubisoft confirmed there will be no playable female characters in Assassin’s Creed Unity due to production costs.

Regardless of that drama, it’s great to hear that a console version of Dragon Age: Inquisition will hit 1080p. The openness of open world games takes a great deal of computational and graphical power to get right and to look beautiful, and with the wonderous magic and combat action that the Dragon Age series provides should look great with the jump to the next generation of consoles. We’ll also get to see how the Frostbyte 3 engine works in a magical fantasy setting.

Dragon Age: Inquisition will be released for the PC, PS4, Xbox One, PS3 and Xbox 360 on November 18th.
