Rise of the Tomb Raider Eyeing A January PC Launch?
By Martin Benn
Rise of the Tomb Raider has a newly launched page on the Steam store looking to launch in January 2016.
As noted on PC Gamer, Rise of the Tomb Raider has launched a new Steamfront page with a notable January 2016 launch window. Amazon, while previously noted a release date around January 29, has reverted their PC Steam download to a placeholder of December 31, 2016.
Thus far, Square Enix has not made any comment on when the actual release date will be released on PC. Previously, we had only heard the PC release for Rise of the Tomb Raider would be “early 2016” from their mouths. We will not know much more until Square Enix confirms it, but it seems unlikely the Steam Store would put January as a release date and others would have put it there before as well.

My take: The Steam PC release was pushed up to expand the audience after a disappointing launch of the game. The game did not sell as well as Square Enix or Microsoft would have hoped; Rise of the Tomb Raider was notably absent from November and December NPD top 10 lists in the US. Specifically for Square Enix, they have already restructured Crystal Dynamics with new leadership. Microsoft publishing Rise of the Tomb Raider for 3 months of exclusivity seems rather implausible. With Tomb Raider 2013, a PC version was not released until almost a year after console launch. Microsoft makes sure the PS4 didn’t get a hold of the game until a year later, but Steam gets it in 3 months while they are in the midst of a big push for Xbox on PC? Seems weird to me.
